Why We Run: Make a Difference like Kavonn

SFHBlogGraphic7

In our inaugural Stride for Hope 5K & Homecoming Festival, we’re running in support of adult learners who are working to transform their lives and communities by offering education and career training that create direct pathways to economic mobility—or even ways to give back to themselves.

Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School (AoH) alum Kavonn R. is the perfect example.

In the fall of 2018, Kavonn transferred from his high school to AoH’s GED program. He appreciated how the GED program can be completed at his own pace, allowing him to delve deeper and master the subjects that challenged him.

And while he earned his GED in 2023, he never left. Shortly after graduation, he signed up to be a volunteer, inspired by his journey and his passion for helping other adult learners. Kavonn began tutoring 1:1 with learners in math and reading at the Ward 5 site. He also completes other tasks, like assisting the front office and creating class schedules for each semester.

However, his all-time favorite volunteer opportunity is substituting for evening math classes (Algebra). He loves making connections with learners through teaching and seeing their faces light up when they begin to understand a problem. This sparked an aspiration for teaching.

“Knowing that I impact people brings me joy,” Kavonn said.

He plans to continue volunteering at Ward 5 alongside his part-time job, excited to serve the mission that once benefited him.
