On March 12, five learners from the Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School (AoH) participated in the school’s first-ever theatrical performance.
The event was made possible through a partnership with The Theater Lab Dramatic School of the Arts’ Life Stories Program, a tuition-free initiative designed to promote self-expression through storytelling.
Over the course of eight weeks, AoH learners participated in weekly workshops led by Life Stories theater coaches. Together, they fostered creativity, community, and connection to empower each other and their life stories, culminating in an original piece. The final performance was then displayed for AoH learners, staff, and community members at the Theater Lab.
While it was many of the learners’ first times on stage, the learners expressed that the power of storytelling motivated them to tackle their fears, in hopes their experiences would inspire others.
“You never know what somebody out there is going through,” AoH learner and participant Maybelle A. said. “I want to tell my story … I want to encourage someone else with health issues like me to use their courage to go through what I went through.”
Many AoH learners have faced challenges, including childcare, financial pressures, and the systemic barriers of society. But with the introduction of the Theater Lab, learners were able to think critically and dive deeper into their journey. Their self-reflection encouraged empowerment— they persevered through a lot. If they can overcome life’s challenges, they can do whatever they set their mind to, such as earning their high school diploma.
“My goal is to get my GED and now go to college,” AoH learner and participant Tai said.
In addition to setting goals, participation in the program improved learners’ communication skills with AoH teachers and staff. This helped staff understand learners’ backgrounds and better prepare them to reach educational and workforce goals.
Even though the program has ended, learners have the opportunity to continue their growth through the Theater Lab’s adult programs for free, thanks to the organization’s generosity.
We are grateful for the Theater Lab’s partnership and the impact they’ve left on AoH and around the District.
