Gina C.’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and unwavering determination.
Before earning her CompTIA A+ certification at Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School (AoH) and graduating summa cum laude from the Catholic University of America, Gina lived through chapters marked by both curiosity and hardship.
She grew up fascinated by computers at a time when “they barely had an internet,” later studying classical voice and teaching herself database development using a CD from a bookstore. Her early IT career blossomed in telecommunications, where she worked her way up to Network Operations Engineer.
But life shifted dramatically—she lost her mother, her job, her home, and faced her darkest moments. Yet even then, she persevered, hoping to create a better life for herself.
Education would be the answer. In 2023, she enrolled in Catholic University’s Information Technology bachelor’s program. While at Catholic, Gina discovered AoH. She saw the IT program and immediately felt drawn to it, believing it could support her as she worked toward her bachelor’s degree.
“If there’s an opportunity to grow, I’m going to get it,” she said. She began in CompTIA Tech+, quickly advanced to A+, and started balancing full-time coursework at Catholic with certification training during the day.
What she learned at AoH strengthened her academic performance, giving her a practical foundation alongside her bachelor’s program. She made hundreds of flashcards, studied everywhere she went, and pushed through exhaustion because she felt she owed it to AoH to succeed.
This was not out of pressure but out of gratitude. AoH staff had given her food when she was hungry, a laptop when she needed one, encouragement when she felt defeated, and kindness at every turn.
“They treat you with kindness from the security guard to the front door… AoH gives you everything—mental support, resources, love,” she said.
Spring 2026 was bountiful for Gina. She finished her bachelor’s program with a perfect GPA and passed her CompTIA A+ Core 1 exam. She was proud of her achievements and was grateful that AoH recognized them by asking her to speak at graduation.
But most of all, she was excited to share her journey to inspire others— and even herself. When she was handed a copy of her speech with her late mother’s name written on it— Audrey— she felt an ‘Aha’ moment.
“I said, ‘Oh my God … she’s here with me.”
There, she felt the universe aligning.
After years of struggle, loss, and rebuilding, seeing her mother’s name on the speech felt like a sign that she was exactly where she was meant to be. It was as if her mother was standing beside her, witnessing the daughter who had finally found her own classroom, her own community, her own victory. Gina described it as a moment of “divine affirmation”, a reminder that her journey had come full circle with AoH and had the chance to grow even more.
Today, Gina is enrolled at George Washington University, working towards her Master’s in Cybersecurity and is a Jeannette Rankin Foundation scholarship recipient. She is also preparing to return to AoH for the CompTIA Security+ program and is working closely with AoH’s employment specialists as she applies for IT roles.
She dreams of earning her doctorate, teaching her own AoH class, and one day “curing data breaches.” Her son is now enrolled in AoH’s IT pathways, as well, continuing the legacy she began.
Gina’s story is ultimately about perseverance. She faced setbacks that interrupted her journey, yet she kept moving forward. As she says, “If you’re not winning at AoH, it’s because you don’t want to.” To her, AoH provides every tool a learner needs—academic support, emotional encouragement, real-world training, job connections, and a community that refuses to let people fall through the cracks. She sees AoH as a place where success is not just possible, but inevitable when paired with effort.
“They want you to grow. They want you to be better.” And Gina wants to win—not just for herself, but for everyone who sees their future reflected in hers.
